Toughens us down, strips
Our hearts to tangles of tree limbs.
We stain against the ripened sky like clefts
In clay. Blood-burned sulfuric soil.

Then we make our lives of it.
Cracking shells, our pecan valves
Finding surprise

As we thump the land.
Valuable, for the toasted flesh

Inside.
