November Garden

The impatiens drops white petals
from watery arms
that once burned
with a fluttering light.

In the garden’s perfect squalor,
crumpled sage sags
into the grey hole of the lithodora,
and heuchera
shrivels at its ruffled edge.

I want the maple’s way with winter:
flaming out in brilliant crimson.
