To Francesca…

HOME LOOKS LIKE Our gate opening so we can get into the driveway.
ON MY FRIDGE This year’s Christmas card, a school project made by my little sister advertising FDR’s New Deal, and several sticky notes reminding us to get rice the next time we visit a grocery store.
A FAVORITE BUS MEMORY Two of my best friends ride the bus with me every morning, and it’s always entertaining to fit the three of us into two bus seats. Usually someone sits on my lap and by the time we get to school my legs are numb but it’s well worth it.

Writing a Home

It will be hard at first.
Coming from childhood where there was always
A soft place to land,
The wider world will seem cruel.
Don’t give up.
Build yourself a house
Out of the things you tell yourself
On rainy days,
Write yourself a home
To keep you safe.
