To Lindsay…

CURRENTLY READING La Familia: Chicano Families in the Urban Southwest 1848 to the Present by Richard Griswold del Castillo, for my thesis. My history project and my poem are in honor of my grandmother, and her legacy of love and labor.
MAKES ME SMILE My dog Flopsy, a fluffy little bundle of everything home means to me. When I hear someone jingle their keys I smile because it reminds me of the sound her dog tags make.
PERSONAL MOTTO Magnum in Parvo, Latin for “much in Little.”

Perdóname, Is This Home?

Perdóname.
Mi mama ha aprendido
el ingles,
y ya,
Estoy aprendiendo
el español.
Y ya,
Estoy
perdiendo
todo lo que pensaba
perdiendo
todo lo quería ser la verdad
perdiendo
mi mente, mi corazón, mi alma-
para encontrar

que
hogar
No puede ser un idioma.

Perdóname, Is This Home?

Perdóname.
Mi mama ha aprendido
el ingles,
y ya,
Estoy aprendiendo
el español.
Y ya,
Estoy
perdiendo
todo lo que pensaba
perdiendo
todo lo quería ser la verdad
perdiendo
mi mente, mi corazón, mi alma-
para encontrar

que
hogar
No puede ser un idioma.

Excuse me, Is This Home?

Excuse me.
My mom has learned
English.
And I,
am learning
Spanish.
And now,
I am
losing
everything I was thinking
losing
everything that needed to be true
losing
my mind, my heart, my soul
to find out

that
home
cannot be a language.
