Cold Swim

Down I dive
Hitting the water’s smooth flat surface.
An arrow through jello.
Charging as I swim,
Harsh cold water rushing against me,
Chlorine in my mouth.
A hair’s breadth away…
Then I touch the wall.
Hoisting myself onto cold gray cement,
A bitter January wind tells me I lost.
