The Whales

I did not see the whales.

Other beachgoers
shouting, gesturing.

Shielding, squinting,
I see only a steady line between blues,
the surf pounding the day away.

Beachly stuff resumes:
Children splashing,
Swimmers straining.
The surf pounding.

One last shield and squint.
I fear, know,
There’s so little time.
