We might be swept away, or lifted up, or drowned

Sometimes we stand chest-deep in water and see
change, rippling toward us or rising with a white crest.
We taste salt, feel the pull of kelp, tread water for a while.
We become soft with algae, rough with new mussels.
We need this–there is always another wave.
