THE LITTLE CALUMET ESCAPE

Loaned-out ice-skates, blades dull as boredom
Sized a bit too large for budding teenage toes
Exhausted laces frazzled, criss-crossed, hooked-up
In solitude I ease upon the Little Calumet
River frozen deeply, fouled decades by polluters
Beckons an ironic, teenage liberation
For swooshing darkened moods to light
And slicing flawless figure-eights
